OperaUpClose is looking for a Company Stage Manager to join the production team on our new English version of Puccini’s Madam Butterfly.
Retold from a female, East-Asian perspective and performed by a diverse-led cast, this Madam Butterfly is transposed to 1980s Japan and explores the mind and heart of a young woman, whose mental health deteriorates for reasons far beyond losing the love of her erstwhile husband.
This production has been re-orchestrated for a cast of 8 singers, accompanied by 4 musicians through a variety of Japanese and Western instruments.
Three key areas for the Company Stage Manager are scheduling, effective internal and external communications and pastoral care. The right candidate will be resourceful and intuitive, with a sense of when and what kind of support to offer to their team.
During the rehearsal period, the Company Stage Manager will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the rehearsal room. They will work closely with the directors, designers and production manager throughout the rehearsal process. Where necessary, they will undertake the making and sourcing of props, as well as manage the props budget as set by the production manager. They will also create/ update paperwork for tour and circulate rehearsal reports and schedules to the company.
On tour, the CSM and TSM will be the point for contact for Theatre Technical Teams with changes to schedules and paperwork ahead of each performance date. They will also be the point of contact for the cast of eight singers, four musicians and staff director during the rehearsal and touring periods. The CSM will provide efficient scheduling for the cast during these periods and keep hours properly monitored/ timesheets processed accurately.
Together with the TSM, they will transport the set (driving a Luton van) between each venue. The CSM will run the get in and out of each venue and ‘run the show from backstage’ with props / set dressing / costume as necessary.
