Job Description:
OperaUpClose is looking for a Company Stage Manager to join the production team on our new opera for 3-5-year-olds, based on Jill Murphy’s much-loved picture book, Peace At Last.

This new 30-minute opera will premiere at Gallions’ Summer Festival (Newham) in July 2019 and follow with a national tour to schools and theatres in the summer and autumn terms. 

We are looking for an experienced and organised touring Company Stage Manager, with excellent interpersonal skills, a clean driving licence, experience of working in school settings and Company Managing theatre/opera productions on tour.

During the rehearsal period, the Company Stage Manager will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the rehearsal room. Three key areas for the CSM are scheduling, effective internal and external communications and pastoral care. The right candidate will be resourceful and intuitive, with a sense of when and what kind of support to offer to their team. They will work closely with the directors, designers and production manager throughout the rehearsal process. Where necessary, they will undertake the making and sourcing of props, as well as manage the props budget as set by the production manager. They will also create/ update paperwork for tour and circulate rehearsal reports and schedules to the company. 

The CSM will be the point of contact for the schools and theatres taking this production, ensuring that they have the correct schedules and paperwork ahead of our performance date. They will also be the point of contact for the cast of three singers and two musicians during the rehearsal and touring periods. The CSM will provide efficient scheduling for the cast during these periods and keep hours properly monitored/ timesheets processed accurately. 

The CSM will tour with a Technical Stage Manager. Together, they will transport the set (in our van) between each venue. The CSM will run the get in and out of each venue and ‘run the show from backstage’ with props / set dressing / costume as necessary.

Person Specification:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a company stage manager for touring productions 

  • Experience of taking theatre or opera into school settings 

  • Experience of touring theatre or opera to studios 

  • Experience of working on children’s shows 

  • Resourceful, intuitive and flexible approach to work

  • Experience of line management

  • Budgeting experience

  • Experience of company management

  • Full, clean driving licence (held for at least two years) 

  • Experience of driving a van 

  • Working knowledge of current Health and Safety legislation

  • Excellent time management skills

  • Excellent team worker

  • Excellent problem-solving skills 

  • Holds an enhanced DBS certificate, ideally on the online update service
