Job Description:
OperaUpClose is looking for a Technical Stage Manager to join the production team on our new opera for 3-5-year-olds, based on Jill Murphy’s much-loved picture book, Peace At Last.

This new 30-minute opera will premiere at Gallions’ Summer Festival (Newham) in July 2019 and follow with a national tour to schools and theatres in the summer and autumn terms. 

We are looking for an experienced and organised touring Technical Stage Manager, with excellent interpersonal skills, a clean driving licence, experience of working in school settings and re-lighting theatre/opera productions on tour. 

The Technical Stage Manager will join in the second week of the rehearsal period. They will work closely with the directors, designers, production manager and company stage manager throughout the final weeks of rehearsals, sourcing props and costumes, and creating and updating the appropriate touring paperwork in regard to the LX design. 

On tour, the Technical Stage Manager will be responsible for transporting the set (in our van), getting in and out of each venue, relighting and operating the show from a lighting desk. Throughout the tour, the Technical Stage Manager will need to keep the technical paperwork up-to-date. They will also need to circulate show reports.

Person Specification:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a technical/stage manager for touring productions 

  • Experience of taking theatre or opera into school settings 

  • Experience of touring theatre or opera to studios 

  • Experience of working on children’s shows 

  • Excellent understanding of lighting, ability to re-light on tour 

  • Full, clean driving licence (held for at least two years) 

  • Experience of driving a van 

  • Working knowledge of current Health and Safety legislation

  • Excellent time management skills

  • Excellent team worker

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Can read music / operate lights from cues in a musical score 

  • Holds an enhanced DBS certificate, ideally on the online update service
